Presidents Message 2019-2020

Welcome to another year with the ASCE Wisconsin Southwest Branch!

We are looking forward to another great year of Section, Branch, and Younger Member activities.

The ASCE Southwest WI Branch hosted the 2019 Wisconsin Section Annual Meeting on Friday, October 4, 2019 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Madison, WI. The event had over 200 people in attendance including ASCE members, presenters, award winners, and exhibitors. Overall it was a strong showing for our Wisconsin ASCE membership and the event was a big success! The Annual Meeting Planning Committee would like to extend our gratitude to all the technical session presenters, ASCE President-Elect Kancheepuram “Guna” N. Gunalan, Jon Schmidt, PE, SECB, Assistant Professor Daniel Wright, PhD, and Chief Meteorologist Bob Lindmeier for taking time out of their busy schedules to address our membership. Additionally, a special thanks goes out to all our exhibitors who’s patronage makes this annual meeting possible. Finally, a big thank you to all the Southwest Branch Planning Committee members who helped put this event together. We hope that all of you in attendance had an enjoyable day and we hope see you next year!

In addition to the Annual Meeting in October, it was a busy month for the SW Branch Younger Member Group (YMG). The YMG held two events, both of which were jointly held with the UW-Madison student chapter. The first event was a bowling night at Union South where professionals and students got to bowl, enjoy some pizza and beverages, and network in a relaxed setting. The second event was an Adopt-a-Highway cleanup of a stretch of road that the UW-Madison student chapter has adopted for a number of years. The YMG joined the students in their efforts to cleanup the road had a fun day doing so.

As always, our autumn is filled with our annual joint meeting with the UW-Madison and UW-Platteville student chapters in November. Each year, with the help of our members, the Wisconsin Section, and generous donations from local firms, the ASCE Southwest Branch Scholarship Fund program is able to award the Robbie Sivak Memorial Scholarship to recognize outstanding civil engineering students to assist with the costs they incur for their education. The Branch Board will select deserving students from the pool of applicants and award the scholarships at the joint meeting held this year by the UW-Madison student chapter on Thursday, November 14.

Looking to the future, the Southwest Branch and the YMG will be hosting a number of meetings and events over the winter months. If you have not already done so, please check our website and calendar for updates to upcoming events!
